The Great In-Law Escape: Pinky, Rose, and the Comedy of Family Traditions

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

Pinky made an appearance at Papa's place, bringing her little ones along for the ride.

In India, it's the usual tradition for the daughter-in-law and her kids to shack up with the in-laws, which in this case would be Papa. But lo and behold, both Pinky and Rose, the daughter-in-laws, have a knack for staying with their own parents instead of their in-laws. There must be a million reasons for this, but one that takes the cake is Papa's talent for being the rudest of the rude, causing even the closest family members to scatter like startled pigeons.

As luck would have it, Rose is currently enjoying her stay in a different city at her parent's humble abode. She has a burning desire to pay Pinky and her little ones a long-overdue visit while they're under Papa's roof. It's been eons since they've seen each other face to face, you see. To sweeten the deal, Rose even brought some snazzy new clothes for Pinky's baby girl.

But now Rose finds herself in a pickle, pondering whether she should hop on a bus or rent a car to make her way to her in-law's humble abode. She's caught in a whirlwind of words, desperately searching for the right concoction to relay to Papa, her dear father-in-law, about their plans. She wants to make it crystal clear that they'll arrive in the morning and make their grand exit back to her parent's nest by nightfall.

Since Sri, her trusty partner in crime, has already headed back home to the USA, he's not around to lend a helping hand in decision-making. When Rose dialed Sri's number, seeking advice on the matter, he relayed some sage words of wisdom. Sri reminded Rose to have a clear plan of action and to be mindful of the words she chooses when addressing Papa.

At first, Rose had this bright idea of telling Papa that she'd be returning to her parent's home that night because, her dear father would be left all alone. But hearing this, Sri exclaimed, "That's the dumbest approach you could take with Papa!" Sri knew all too well that Papa despises other people to the bone. If Rose mentioned that her father would be alone, Papa would take it as an affront, and the response she'd receive would be far from pleasant.

Rose has a tendency for both astounding reflexive actions and questionable approaches when delivering messages. Sri can't quite wrap his head around why Rose behaves this way.

So, after hearing Rose's plan, Sri offered some advice: Keep it simple, keep it brief, keep it precise, and for goodness' sake, don't complicate the situation. Be smart about it, Rose.
