Types Of Investing (Chapter - 2)

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

Types of Investing?

There are many different types of Investments, each with its own unique set of characteristics, risk levels, and potential returns. Here are a few of the most common types of Investments.

Stocks/Equities:

Stocks/Equities represent ownership in a company. When you buy a stock in a company, you become a shareholder of the company and have the potential to profit from the company's growth in the form of Dividends and Capital appreciation.

Real Estate:

Investing in real estate involves buying properties such as residential buildings or commercial buildings, with the expectation of generating rental income or realizing profits through property appreciation.

Mutual funds/ETFs:

Mutual Funds and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) are investment vehicles that offer diversification by investing in a basket of stocks. ETFs track a specific index, such as the S&P 500 or Total Market, and are traded on the stock market like any regular stock. On the other hand, Mutual Funds are not traded on the stock market. Instead, they collect money from investors and invest the money after the trading day is completed. Here are some key differences between Mutual Funds and ETFs:

Mutual Funds:

- Not traded on the stock market.

- Collect money from investors and invest the money after the trading day is completed.

- Higher management fees compared to ETFs, but there are also lower ones.

- Can be actively managed or passively managed.

- Can be bought or sold at the end of the trading day at the net asset value (NAV).

ETFs:

- Traded on the stock market like any regular stock.

- Lower management fees compared to mutual funds.

- Can be bought or sold throughout the trading day at market price.

- Typically passively managed.

- Can be used to invest in specific sectors.

It's important to note that both Mutual Funds and ETFs offer diversification and can be used to build a diversified investment portfolio. The choice between the two depends on individual investment goals, risk tolerance, and investment preferences.
